What to Do When Your USCIS Case Is Outside of Processing Times

If you find that your U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) case is taking longer than expected, here’s what you can do:

1. Check Your Case Status

  • Utilize the USCIS case status checking tool using the link provided: https://egov.uscis.gov/ 
  • Use your USCIS receipt notice to access this information.

  • After gathering the information, assess if your case falls outside the normal processing times.

4. Contact USCIS 

  • If your case is outside of processing times and you have questions about immigration services, contact USCIS through their Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283.

5. Seek Help from the USCIS Ombudsman

  • If the USCIS Contact Center doesn’t provide a solution, consider reaching out to the USCIS Ombudsman.
  • The Ombudsman assists individuals and employers with immigration issues, identifies problem areas, and proposes solutions.
  • You can request assistance by completing Form DHS-7001 online.

6. Submitting a Request to the Ombudsman

  • To ask for help from the Ombudsman, submit an electronic Form DHS-7001.
  • Upon submission, you will receive a case number and an acknowledgement email.

7. Additional Information

  • Include all USCIS receipt numbers related to your application or petition when filling out Form DHS-7001.
  • Provide copies of important information and documentation.
